The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) are recruiting roughly 100 certified psychiatric and mental health and gerontology nurses to work in Louisiana. The search for these nurses comes on the heels of a request for assistance from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Selected registered nurses will be sent as part of a multi-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, substance abuse counselors, and pastoral counselors.

The assignment will last for two weeks and there will be four deployment cycles starting in September and ending on November 1, 2005. Expenses related to travel, housing and meals will be covered. In addition, selected participants will receive a $200 a day honorarium.

Applicants must hold a current active RN license; be certified by ANCC in psychiatric and mental health or gerontological nursing; and have professional liability insurance. In addition, applicants must be able to withstand the rigors of working in a disaster response area for a continuous two week period.
