Physicians displaced by the tragic events resulting from Hurricane Katrina will have an ally in the American Medical Association announced it will work with various state licensing boards to make the credentialing process smoother for physicians displaced by Hurricane Katrina as they seek to relocate following the storm.

"We're doing all we can on our end to provide state licensing authorities the data they need to license these physicians," said AMA Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Michael D. Maves, MD in a written statement from the AMA. "It's important that we try to cut through the bureaucracy and get these physicians back on the front lines caring for the many patients affected by the recent tragedies."

To do so, the AMA will make the widely used online service ePhysician Profiles free to state licensing officials in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas.

By making this database available, officials with the AMA hope to provide additional, quick access to physician information to credentialing staff and assist in a smoother, faster licensing and credentialing process for physicians crossing over to neighboring states.
