In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the American Medical Association announced the US Department of Health and Human Services will coordinate the medical assistance offered by physicians, nurses and other health care professionals during this national medical relief effort.

Physicians and other medical professionals with any state license who can commit to short-term, long-term or rotating coverage are urgently needed in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Health care professionals interested in volunteering in the relief effort can find additional sign-up information at the Health Care Professionals and Relief Personnel Volunteer Page web site, http://www.hhs.gov/katrina/, or call 866/528-6334.

Meanwhile, the state of Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure has announced emergency regulations which will suspend the application process for physicians holding a current, unrestricted medical license from their current licensing authority. These physicians will be granted an Emergency Temporary Medical License (MD/DO/DPM) for the duration of the governor's declaration of emergency.
