Dear credentialing colleague:

Last week I received an e-mail from Sue Webb, medical staff coordinator at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, OR. Apparently, a physician had been looking for locum work in Oregon and was referred to a Samaritan Health hospital as a locum candidate through a staffing agency. One of the staff members at the Samaritan Health facility "Googled" him as part of the initial screening process and came up with some disturbing facts. The physician in question was accused of gross negligence and is suspected of contributing to the accidental deaths of several patients. This timely communication serves to remind us that a hospital, clinic, or managed care organization should conduct this simple, yet effective search when faced with the application of any practitioner. Normally the search will return only positive information, but when, as here, it reveals information not provided by the applicant, the 10 seconds necessary to conduct the check will make your day and perhaps saves lives.
