Dear credentialing colleague:

Every medical staff in the nation has a section in its bylaws or policies identifying the hospital's objective appointment or membership standards.  These standards carefully outline criteria such as a current, unrestricted license, successful completion of medical (or other) school, successful completion of an accredited post graduate residency program, board certification or admissibility, professional references, freedom from prior corrective actions or litigation, etc.

You should organize and outline these standards on a single page, along with the mission of the staff and hospital. Once published, you should provide a copy to any party expressing interest in making an application. A statement of the staff's interest in appointing only extremely well qualified individuals might complete the text nicely. If appropriate, you might also follow with a statement like: "Historically, only three of four applicants to the staff are ultimately appointed by the board of directors."

Such a procedure may help in deterring applicants who are not serious candidates for appointment, and will make clear exactly what you are looking for.

That's it for today.

All the best,
Hugh Greeley
