Keep an eye out for this potential change from the JCAHO-the accreditor is looking at a proposed change to standard HR.1.20 that would require primary-source verification of licensure, training, and education for all practitioners required to have a license to practice.
The proposed revision is now in committee review, according to the JCAHO's June 2004 issue of Perspectives. The current standard-found in the Human Resources chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals-requires hospitals to verify current licensure, education, experience, and competency in accordance with law, regulation, and organization policy. It does not speak to primary-source verification, which the JCAHO requires when credentialing members of the medical staff.
Proposed revisions to selected medical staff standards for hospitals and revisions to credentialing standards for ambulatory care organizations are also in committee review, according to Perspectives.
