Complying with the JCAHO's timeframe for granting privileges was a top problem standard for hospitals surveyed by the accreditor during 2003.

Standard MS.4.20 was number eight on the list of top 10 most challenging standards for hospitals surveyed from January to December 2003, the JCAHO said in its May 2004 issue of Perspectives. [The JCAHO renumbered the standard to MS.4.20 in its 2004 Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals. In 2003, it was numbered as MS. 5.11.]

MS.4.20 requires hospitals to make appointments and reappointments to the medical staff for the granting, renewal, or revision of clinical privileges for a period of no more than two years. Six percent of hospitals surveyed last year failed to comply with the standard.
