Panel finds Medicare payments to HMOs higher than traditional Medicare costs

The government is paying Medicare managed care plans seven percent more than it would cost to treat the same patients in the traditional Medicare program, according to an Associated Press (AP) story that reported on findings of an advisory panel.


In some areas, payments exceed traditional Medicare costs by more than 20 percent, said the federal Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. The higher payments result from the Medicare law that President Bush signed in December, the AP reported.
