A bill that would limit liability for obstetricians and gynecologists has faltered in the Senate. Republicans this week fell 12 votes short of the needed votes to force a floor debate on legislation that would limit damages in health care lawsuits, according to published reports.

The White House backed the bill and issued a February 24 statement, describing the legislation as "an important step toward ensuring that the nation's liability system fairly compensates those who are truly harmed, does not drive good doctors out of medicine, and increases access to quality, affordable health care."

Republicans and Democrats are expected to continue to debate over medical tort reform through the remainder of this election year. Republicans say the legislation to limit lawsuits against obstetricians is needed because the skyrocketing cost of malpractice insurance is forcing doctors out of business.
