The medical staff should participate in developing criteria and policies for the use of restraints and should approve these policies. Surveyors will typically review restraint policies and procedures and check patients on the floor to make sure that these policies and procedures are followed. Surveyors will ask for documentation of medical staff collaboration in the development and medical staff approval of the policies and procedures. Make sure that all practitioners who order restraint or seclusion are trained in the hospital’s policies.

This week’s tip is from Medical Staff Standards Crosswalk: A Quick Reference Guide to The Joint Commission, CMS, HFAP, and DNV Standards by Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS.
