Some organizations address the credentialing and privileging of advanced practice professionals (APP) in their bylaws. In such cases, the section generally references other appropriate sections of the medical staff bylaws, indicating that they apply to APPs as well. The section on credentialing and privileging APPs would then specify any additional, unique requrements that do and do not apply to the APP.
Other organizations only reference the credentialing and privileging of APPs in their medical staff bylaws and include the full details in a separate policy and procedure document. The framework for a separate APP credentialing policy and procedure might be as follows:
- Purpose
- Definition of terms
- Statement of policy
- Required minimum qualifications for APPs
- Requirements and basic responsibilities of APPs
- Relationship of APPs to medical staff members
- Initial credentialing procedures, such as eligibility for application, demonstration of applicant qualifications, application and verification processes
- Evaluation and decision-making process
