Tip of the week: Send only complete applications to department chairs or the credentials committee for review

Administrative personnel sometimes feel compelled to forward an application to department chairs or to the credentials committee even though the application is incomplete. In some cases, the hospital has not received certain references or information pertaining to past clinical activity or malpractice cases, or has not yet verified all of the practitioner’s credentials. Likewise, some reviewers make a recommendation regarding appointment or clinical privileges even if the file does not contain sufficient information. In today’s highly scrutinized medical and legal environments, it is best to have hospital administration assume nearly all responsibility for assembling the credentials file—in compliance with hospital and medical staff policies and procedures—before requesting that designated reviewers review the file. It is important to have in policies and procedures a definition of what makes an application complete as well as the method for declaring an application incomplete and therefore not eligible to begin or continue processing.
