The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) is seeking to broaden its scope of accreditation and secure additional peer review in an effort to increase patient safety. The CAR seeks these changes after a series of cases across several provinces required authorities to double check thousands of scans. The CAR currently accredits radiologists in bone mineral density scans and mammography but would like to accredit X-ray fluoroscopy, CT, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound to increase the quality of care that radiologists provide.
In addition to broadening its accreditation, the CAR aims to help hospitals conduct better peer review on radiologists. “…[W]hat we want to do is try and enhance things that they may be doing, give radiologists opportunities and ideas as to how to institute peer review in their facilities,” said Dr. Edward Lyons, president of the CAR to CBC News Canada.
