In the news: Highmark moving nurse practitioners to PCP status

Pennsylvania-based Highmark, Inc., is looking to expand the role of nurse practitioners as primary care providers, according to the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette. Federal healthcare form may increase the number of insured patients by millions, meaning that the current physician shortage will only be felt more acutely. In response, Highmark is reaching out to 200 nurse practitioners who practice independently in Pennsylvania. The nurse practitioners will collaborate with Highmark-affiliated physicians to provide primary care.
