When it comes to impaired physicians, medical staffs often focus on identifying the problem (e.g., alcohol, drug abuse, disease, or aging) and helping the physician find an appropriate treatment plan. However, medical staffs tend to fall short when it is time for the physician to return to work after a voluntary or mandatory medical leave of absence. Medical staffs often manage the reintegration process on an ad hoc basis, but taking a more systematic approach will reduce the liability of the medical staff and hospital and help medical staff members get their bearings during a time of need.
