The wait is over for those medical staffs wondering who will lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and possibly influence the next generation of CMS standards. Earlier this week, the White House announced that President Obama appointed Donald M. Berwick, MD a health policy expert, to lead CMS, according to a July 7 New York Times article. Obama nominated Berwick in April but decided to install him at a CMS post now rather than waiting for Congress to confirm him. With Berwick in the post, he can help implement the healthcare reform law.

Because the president acted without Congress’ vote, Berwick’s term will expire in 2011, at the end of the next session of Congress, as outlined by the Constitution. CMS has been without a permanent leader since late 2006.
