The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented three different levels of surgical care that its medical centers may offer: complex, intermediate or standard. Medical centers will be designated by which level of care they provide. The rating system is a result of a comprehensive review of the VA, which began in 2007. Additionally, VA medical centers have been the subject of Office of Inspector General (OIG) reports that uncovered surgical problems, as well as credentialing and privileging discrepancies.
“We are committed to expand Veteran access to quality care,” Dr. Robert Petzel, VA's Under Secretary of Health, said in a press release. “If a patient requires a surgical procedure that exceeds the facility's complexity rating, VA will ensure that the patient receives the required care from another provider.”
