The credentialing process takes as long as required to compile a complete application file, verify sources, and receive board recommendation. There is no minimum or maximum time frame for completing the credentialing process, which may take two months, or several. Medical staff bylaws, in defining the credentialing and privileging process, specify that completed applications must be acted upon with a specific period of time. Some applications may move faster than others, but others may take longer if a primary source cannot be immediately verified, if an applicant omitted information on the application, or if particular red flags warrant additional investigation.
This week’s question and answer is from Ready, Set, Credential, Second Edition, by Nancy C. Lian, CPMSM, CPCS.
