Ask the expert: Are medical staff members responsible for observers they bring to the hospital?

Yes. If a member of the medical staff chooses to allow an observer to come in and shadow or observe, that member must accept responsibility for that practitioner when he or she is at the organization. This is similar to an allied health professional (AHP) who provides services as a nonemployee: the AHP’s sponsoring physician signs an attestation indicating that the physician acknowledges responsibility for supervising the AHP. The same process should be in place for a clinical observer.
