If the ambulatory care facility (ACF) is affiliated with a hospital or health system network, it may wish to integrate with that organization’s medical staff credentialing and privileging process. This requires the organization or network to delineate the specific privileges performed and services rendered in the ambulatory care setting. Although it’s possible to delegate the actual credentialing, the ACF cannot delegate its oversight responsibilities. If an umbrella organization performs the credentialing, the ACF administrator and medical director (if there is one) must have direct involvement in the review of the credentials and supporting documentation of current competency for any practitioners who provide services in the facility.
This week’s Q&A is from The 2010 Credentials Verification Desk Reference, by Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS.
