Don’t forget to ask "Why?"

Dear readers,

I’m working on an article this week about verifying the work status of practitioners. Most medical staffs don’t have to worry about this because since the medical staff isn’t employing practitioners, they don’t need to verify work status. However, thorough antidotal stories I’ve heard that some medical staffs do verify work status, citizenship, and other employment related characteristics. Why? Because they want to know more about a candidate or because it’s just another check medical staffs can perform as a character reference.

But should medical staffs really be spending valuable time verifying work status? Many experts say no.

It may be tempting to ask more questions to get more information, but before you burry yourself in information, stop and ask “Why are we collecting this data?” If it’s to ascertain current competency or because it’s a legal or regulatory requirement, then go ahead and collect the information. If it falls under the “nice to know, but don’t need to know” category, then ask your medical staff if they would like to stop collecting that particular data.

As busy as the medical staff services department is, it’s vital to make enough time to ask why before collecting more data.

Sincerely,
Emily Berry
