The following are helpful vocabulary words to know to ensure your verification requests collect the information you need.

  • Graduate medical education (GME) office: This office oversees residency programs for the various specialties. It can often verify the resident’s dates of attendance in the program but not the resident’s competency. However, this office will be able to direct your competency request to the appropriate program director if you don’t know who that person is.
  • Program director: A physician responsible for the operation of the residency and/or fellowship program. This individual can offer competency assessments for the practitioner’s training.
  • Residency coordinator: A coordinator is responsible for a specific residency program (i.e., internal medicine, surgery, etc.). They fulfill an administrative role and can help the program director gather the needed information to complete verification requests.
  • Final summative evaluation: This evaluation is the final snapshot of the resident’s competency at the time of graduation. It establishes whether or not performance standards were met.

This week’s tip is from Briefings on Credentialing, May 2010, available online later this month at www.CredentialingResourceCenter.com.
