The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has issued a policy statement advising its member certifying boards to discontinue the use of this term because it has been broadly interpreted across specialties. Some ABMS specialty boards have no time limits; others require applicants to apply within a specified time frame after they complete formal training and require them to complete board certification within another time frame.
The ABMS now suggests using the term “in the process” of board certification. The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) allows use of the term “board eligible,” but has a formal definition for the term board-eligible physician.
