Dear readers,

Last week the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) updated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Now, healthcare providers and entities are required to notify patients if their records are breached. The impetus behind this update was to add more security features to HIPAA in light of the industry-wide move to electronic medical records.

Medical staffs should update their own policies and procedures that reference HIPAA as needed.

It’s interesting to note the security parallels between confidential patient information and other confidential medical documents, such as credentialing and peer review information. What measures does your medical staff take to ensure that unauthorized parties do not have access to peer review information? Perhaps that’s a question to raise at your next medical staff meeting.

Sincerely,

Emily Berry
