Ask the expert: Does DNV approve core privileging?

Yes. Core privileges are specifically mentioned as an appropriate privileging option in the surgical services section of DNV’s standards (page 54). They state: “The medical staff bylaws must include criteria for determining the privileges to be granted to an individual practitioner and a procedure for applying the criteria to individuals requesting privileges. Core privileges for general surgery and surgical subspecialties are acceptable as long as the core is properly defined.”

Medical staffs may also conclude that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approve core privileging as it reviewed DNV’s standards before granting deeming status.
