MSPs should flag new privilege requests and the supporting documentation to bring it to the attention of a chief of staff at the time of file review. If the applicant fails to submit the information for the newly requested procedure, the processing of the reappointment should continue.

The chief should grant the privileges for which he or she feels the applicant has submitted sufficient documentation of current clinical competence and ask the applicant to withdraw his or her request for the other procedures until he or she can provide the required documentation. The chief could simply inform the applicant that the organization cannot process the request because he or she has failed to submit the appropriate information.

This week’s tip is from The Essential Guide to Medical Staff Reappointment by Anne Roberts, CPCS, CPSM.
