Hospitals and medical staffs must perform a delicate balancing act to protect the rights of patients and practitioners. Hospitals have an obligation to provide care for their communities, but they also have an obligation to treat their employees fairly. Any ethical rule, federal- or hospital-based, must be carefully worded to avoid loopholes that practitioners could potentially abuse.
