The American Osteopathic Association’s Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) standard 03.01.22 allows a fair hearing and appeal process. It states that the hospital must have a fair hearing plan for medical staff members and allied health practitioners (AHPs). The process may be different for AHPs and medical staff members, and the hospital may choose to include or exclude AHPs from access to the mechanism.
Those involved in the peer review activities shall not have an economic interest in or a conflict of interest with the subject of the peer review activity. Excluded individuals include those with blood relationships, employer/employee relationships, or other potential conflicts that might prevent the individual from giving an impartial assessment, or that may give the appearance of a bias for or against the subject of the peer review. The fair hearing process outlines the circumstances under which a practitioner may request (or waive) this mechanism.
This week’s question and answer is from the 2009 Credentials Verification Desk Reference by Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS.
