Ask the expert: What’s next for an applicant after the governing board issues unfavorable recommendations?

If the final recommendation from the board is unfavorable to the applicant, the organization should follow the process outlined in the medical staff hearing and appeal document. The MSP should consult with the organization’s legal counsel to discuss the next steps and to ensure that all legal requirements are met. Denial of membership and privileges entitles the applicant to exercise his or her rights to a hearing.
