The majority of state medical boards allow physicians to renew their licenses independent of their clinical activity status, according to a study published in the February issue of Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“The most important number that we found was that 34% [of state boards] query physicians' clinical activity status at both licensure and renewal,” Gary L. Freed, MD, MPH, lead author of both studies and chief of the division of general pediatrics and director of the Child Health Evaluation and Research Unit at the University of Michigan Health System told AMNews. “That means that 66% don't.”
However, the Federation of State Medical Boards is working on a new policy to encourage more investigation into clinical competency during licensure renewals, according to a February 23 AMNews article.
