Former U.S. senator Thomas Daschle, President Obama’s choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) withdrew his name from consideration earlier this week. The high profile candidate was expected to spearhead an ambitious reform effort that would bring more government oversight and uniformity to the healthcare system.
The disclosure that Daschle had $146,000 in unpaid back taxes and ties to a wealthy donor were at odds with the new administration’s ethic rules. The president has yet to announce another nomination for the HHS position.
