MSPs should be extremely careful in their language choice when interacting with medical staff applicants. Language needs to be clear so the applicant knows what directions to follow, and it needs to be legally sound to protect the medical staff should problems arise.

Case in point: last week’s Free Form Friday contained a sample letter denying a request to process an application. However, one reader wrote in to warn readers about using the word “denial” when sending letters to an applicant. She wrote, “This word triggers concerns that NPDB and state reporting requirements come into play. I think a better way to state it is that you simply are unable to process the request. So, last week’s letter could be referred to as a sample letter: unable to process application (because applicant did not meet established criteria).”
