Last week, we posed the question who can be counted as a peer when giving a clinical reference. The answer stated that a peer is someone of the same education level and same specialty. However, a couple of readers wrote in to contrast that definition with the Joint Commission’s definition of a peer. According to The Joint Commission, a peer is someone from the same discipline with essentially the same qualifications. The Joint Commission also allows a physician with similar qualifications to serve as a peer in instances when someone from the same discipline, such as an AHP serving as another AHP’s peer, is not available.
