When drafting medical staff bylaws, beware of terms that may cause confusion. For example, many credentialing policies require applicants to report any felony convictions, and those convictions may prevent a physician from being appointed to the medical staff. However, the definition of “felony” varies from state to state. Often, the individuals who draft credentialing policies are not aware of the scope of misbehavior to which their policy may be applied. Knowing you state’s definitions of such terms allows you to help draft clearer bylaws.

This week’s tip is from The Greeley Guide to Medical Staff Bylaws, Second Edition, by Joseph D. Cooper, MD, CMSL.
