Dear credentialing colleague:
Change is in the air this fall, both for our country and for healthcare organizations. On September 26, 2008, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Healthcare Inc. was approved by CMS as a deemed status accreditation program for hospitals. DNV officially applied for deemed status in December of 2007 after working through a strict application process to meet CMS’ evaluation criteria. DNV now joins The Joint Commission and The American Osteopathic Association’s Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program as an alternative to the CMS compliance survey to meet Medicare requirements.
DNV has already successfully implemented their accreditation program, National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO) utilizing the ISO 9001 Quality Management System in several hospitals across the country. The benefits they promote for utilizing their services include: the currency and infrastructure of the ISO 9001 standards; the people skills of their surveyors; and their annual survey process, emphasizing the importance of continuous readiness.
This approval of DNV, combined with the recent requirement by Congress for The Joint Commission to reapply for deemed status, and the knowledge that there are other organizations seeking deemed status from CMS (e.g. SGS Systems and Services) requires us to educate ourselves and pay attention to the accreditation options. Armed with this knowledge you can assist your organization in determining which fits best.
Remember, credentialing has no other master than the patient.
That’s all for this week.
All the best,
Sally J. Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS
