ECFMG issues advisory on fraudulent letters of recommendation

Credentialing & Verification Update, October 14, 2008

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) has issued an advisory to directors of residency and fellowship programs regarding the prevalence of fraudulent letters of recommendation. MSPs involved in primary source verification should also be aware of the alert. The ECFMG states:

"[Organizations] are responsible for verifying the authenticity of letters of recommendation. In most of the recent cases reviewed by the ECFMG Medical Education Credentials Committee, the fraudulent letters of recommendation were detected by program directors attempting to verify a letter’s authenticity."

The ECFMG offers more information on detecting and handling fraudulent letters of recommendation.
