Some practitioners who exercise privileges at a hospital do so under contractual arrangements. In some cases, the contracts stipulate limitations on privileges that the practitioner may hold. Sometimes such contracts express privileging criteria that are more rigorous than those generally adopted by the medical staff.

However, such contracts should never sanction criteria less rigorous than those adopted by the medical staff. When a hospital grants exclusive contracts, the privileges of other members of the medical staff may be affected. The medical staff credentialing procedures should ensure that all parties have proper notice regarding the effect that contracts will have on privileges.

Sample bylaw language about contracted services and other topics are available in The Greeley Guide to Medical Staff Bylaws, Second Edition, by Joseph D. Cooper, MD, CMSL.
