Will there be fewer oncologists to credential in the future? Possibly, according to a recent report by the American Society for Clinical Oncology which predicts a shortage of 4,080 cancer doctors by 2020.
The report cited the following factors as reasons for the shortage:
-
An aging population—cancer occurs more often in older rather than younger people
-
A large number of oncologists are reaching retirement age
-
More woman, who for unknown reasons see fewer patients than men, are becoming oncologists
