Since 2003, the Florida legislature has continuously lowered the malpractice premiums for doctors, yet they are still the highest in the nation. That, combined with Florida’s optional malpractice laws, has helped the number of uninsured doctors in South Florida double since 2003, according to a July 27 Sun-Sentinel.com article.

Supporters of the optional insurance law argue that malpractice insurance makes doctors targets for lawsuits, regardless of who’s to blame. However, critics say that it puts patients in jeopardy because, should a serious injury occur, the state caps how much compensation the doctor is required to pay. Additionally, Florida requires other practitioners, such as chiropractors, podiatrists, midwives, some nurses, acupuncturists, and optometrists to have malpractice insurance.
