Oncoplastic surgery is a new option for breast cancer surgery patients. It eliminates the need for patients to have one surgery to remove the tumor and an additional plastic surgery for reconstruction, because it incorporates tumor removals and cosmetic repairs into one surgery, according to a July 1 Wall Street Journal article.

Although there is no professional certification for oncoplastic surgery, the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Disease offer training courses for surgeons to practice. Some in the field, such as Michael McGuire, MD, a spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, see the positives and negatives of the new procedure. On the one hand, McGuire welcomes efforts by cancer surgeons to learn what plastic surgeons can do, but on the other hand he questions the training courses. “To think a surgeon can learn how to do this in a weekend course is unwise,” he told the Wall Street Journal.
