A practitioner would want to opt out of privileges that are included in the core set for two common reasons. First, a practitioner may ask to drop specific procedures as a means of limiting emergency department (ED) call. This is allowable, but you should inform the practitioner that although allowed to opt out of these core procedures, he or she will still be required to perform ED call as mandated by the medical staff.
A second, less controversial reason for opting out of core is when a practitioner cannot demonstrate current competency for a given procedure. A process should be in place to allow for this possibility.
This week’s tip is from Converting to Core Privileging: 10 Essential Steps to a Criteria-based Program, by Vicki L. Searcy, CPMSM, and Sally J. Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS.
