When must healthcare organizations query the NPDB?

Credentialing & Verification Update, July 15, 2008

Q: When does The Joint Commission require healthcare organizations query the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB)?

A: Hospitals are the only healthcare entities with mandatory requirements for querying the NPDB. According to MS.4.10 and MS.4.20, The Joint Commission requires that hospitals query the NPDB when clinical privileges are initially granted, at the time of renewal of privileges, and when an applicant requests new privileges.

Hospitals may query at other times, as they deem necessary. Other healthcare entities may query when screening applicants for a medical staff appointment or granting affiliation, when granting clinical privileges, and in support of a professional review activity.

For more information, visit the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).
