Hospitals may perform outpatient services—such as lab work, filling prescriptions, or physical therapy—for the patient of a physician who does not have a relationship with the hospital.

The Joint Commission standards do not specifically address this issue, but information on its Web site notes that if state laws and regulations require an order from an LIP to perform a laboratory test or radiology procedure or to provide outpatient care such as physical, occupational, or speech therapy, then the organization needs to determine that the person ordering the tests, procedures, or care is licensed by the state prior to performing such tests, procedures, or care.

This week’s tip is from The 2008 Credentials Verification Desk Reference, by Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS.
