The Marion (IL) Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center resumed some of the surgical procedures the facility suspended last fall due to the higher than average rate of surgical-related deaths, according to a May 15 GateHouse News Service article. Following the VA’s discovery of the increased death rates, the VA’s inspector general and chief medical inspector found several problem areas, including the credentialing and privileging of surgeons.

Dr. Ralph G. DePalma, the VA’s national director of surgery, said the privileging and credentialing of surgeons and anesthesia staff were now properly aligned for the reinstated surgical procedures (including knee arthroscopies, prostate biopsies, vasectomies, and hernia repairs), according to the article.
