The credentialing industry makes a distinction between clinical privileges and medical staff membership. Legal opinions and The Joint Commission standards support this distinction. Clinical privileges define the individual’s clinical role within the faculty. Medical staff membership defines the individual’s relationship (roles, rights, and responsibilities) within the medical staff.
