A challenge that commonly arises in addressing “crossover” privileges occurs when one type of practitioner (e.g., a physician assistant) requires different criteria for the same privilege requested by another type (e.g., advance practice registered nurse). To solve this problem, the medical staff can adopt a single criterion that just happens to have two options within it. Interpreting this as a uniform standard depends somewhat on semantics. However, many organizations that have used this approach have met the regulatory requirement for a uniform (or equivalent) standard of care throughout the organization.

This week’s answer is from Core Privileges for AHPs: A Practical Approach to Developing and Implementing Criteria-Based Privileges, by Carol S. Cairns, CPMSM, CPCS, and Sally J. Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS.
