The following steps are intended to serve as a starting point for developing a focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE) policy and procedure:
1. Appoint a multidisciplinary task force to develop an organizational policy on FPPE.
2. The task force researches options for validating practitioners’ competency, taking into consideration that there will be wide variations based on specialties (e.g., validating the competency of a rheumatologist who primarily provides consults in the inpatient setting requires a different methodology than that used for validating the competency of a vascular surgeon).
3. The task force creates a draft medical staff FPPE program policy that includes scope, methods, and initial specialty-specific approaches (i.e., guidelines for each specialty area) appropriate for the medical staff and links it to the medical staff quality program (because the content/results of the medical staff quality program should be included as part of the FPPE program).
4. The task force develops draft standardized reporting form(s) for the three types of proctoring (prospective, concurrent, retrospective), including draft criteria and guidelines for each specialty.
5. The task force designs an FPPE implementation approach including an orientation and training program, a methodology for reporting results, and an accountability system for those involved in the process.
Steps 6-10 will appear in next week’s issue of the Credentialing and Privileging Advisor.
These steps are from Core Privileges for Physicians: A Practical Approach to Developing and Implementing Criteria-Based Privileges, Fourth Edition, by Wendy Crimp, RN, BSN, MBA, CPHQ; Sally J. Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS; Vicki L. Searcy, CPMSM; and Mark Smith, MD, MBA, FACS.
