The healthcare field will be in crisis mode by 2030, the year all baby boomers will be at least 65 years old, unless more resources are directed toward geriatric care, according to a report released by the Institute of Medicine on April 14. The report, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, states that currently there are only 7,100 physicians certified in geriatrics—one per every 2,500 older Americans.

According to the report, hospitals can improve older Americans’ access to geriatric care by:

  • Ensuring that all providers show competence in geriatric care skills
  • Increasing the salaries of practitioners focused on geriatric care
  • Training others in the community, including family members and other healthcare providers, to improve their geriatric care skills
