From September 2007 through the April 2008 issues, the Briefings on Credentialing newsletter featured a series of Credentialing 101 articles. Each article focused on a single credentialing topic, and provided a refresher course for the seasoned pro and a just-the-facts introduction for the new MSP on the block. This week's tip is from the article "Assessing and monitoring nonprivileged AHPs," printed in the March 2008 issue:
Every hospital will need to tailor its AHP policy to its unique needs. However, it is best practice to include the following universal elements in every policy:
- Intent of the policy
- Enumeration of the specific disciplines of nonprivileged AHPs (i.e., clinical assistants) permitted to provide care in the organization
- General minimal qualifications of applicants
- Relationship of the clinical assistant to the medical staff member
- Application content and process
- Scope of care
- Level of supervision
- Categories of patients who may be treated
- Medical record charting responsibilities
- Expectations of professional ethics and conduct
- Method of authorization
- Initial and subsequent evaluation of competence
- Suspension, modification, or termination of permission to provide services
