Q&A: What is The Joint Commission's requirement regarding hearings/appeals for ambulatory care facilities?
Credentialing & Verification Update, March 12, 2008
A: With regard to the hearing and appeals processes, The Joint Commission states that an ambulatory care organization's procedures must describe the methods for addressing adverse decisions regarding reappointment denial, reduction, suspension, or revocation of a practitioner's clinical privileges related to quality of care, or treatment and services. In addition, practitioners must be afforded a fair hearing and appellate review. According to The Joint Commission, hearing and appeals processes should enable a uniform and fair process and include the following aspects:
- A mechanism for scheduling a hearing
- The hearing procedures to be used
- The membership of the hearing panel
- A mechanism to appeal an adverse decision through the governance function
